Repair maps 01—06

Six ways condition becomes visible.

Move from fracture and join to fill, surface, reconstruction and dated comparison. Observation stays separate from diagnosis.

01BREAKS / OBSERVATION

A break is an edge with a history

Describe fracture, finished boundary and later loss separately before proposing when an edge formed.

02JOINS / OBSERVATION

A join must remain visible

Separate securely joined fragments, fills, support and visual alignment instead of smoothing them into one surface.

03FILLS / OBSERVATION

Modern completion needs its own layer

Keep restored volume distinct from surviving material while respecting the purpose of the current installation.

04SURFACE / OBSERVATION

A photograph cannot diagnose condition

Use surface images to locate observations, not to identify material change, treatment or instability.

05RECONSTRUCTION / OBSERVATION

A reconstructed outline is an argument

Keep surviving fragments, proposed position, support and missing volume distinguishable and reversible.

06CHANGE / OBSERVATION

Change needs two controlled records

Build comparisons that expose differences in date, camera, light, crop and installation before claiming object change.

Record the whole first

A detail needs a complete object, location frame, current mount and viewpoint. Without them, a feature loses scale and context.

Use professional sources

Material, treatment, cause and stability require accountable conservation or collection documentation.

Publish uncertainty

Separate observed features, source-supported interpretations and unresolved areas. Keep every annotation reversible.
